SDP Case Study
Directions: Use this case study as anecdotal information in your Topic 3 assignment.
Setting: A coach is closing out practice and gathers team into huddle:
Coach: Hey everyone. Don’t forget about our team building scrimmage tomorrow at the
women’s state prison. This is a great opportunity for us to give back and to positively impact our
community and the lives of the women there. Remember Amanda, Evelyn, and Sheila, you will
be sharing your personal testimonies tomorrow. As practice, give us a little piece of what you’re
going to share now.
Team captain: I know this is your first time, but I did it last year and it is life changing. Let me
tell you.
Amanda: Hey everyone! You all know that I’m from the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana and
I am the first in my family to graduate high school and attend college. This was all because of
my basketball scholarship. My love of basketball began when I was really little when my dad
would play with my uncles every weekend. Being a girl, I never thought that they would let me
play. But my dad always encouraged me that I can do anything I put my mind to. So, each
weekend, we would work on my basketball skills after I completed my homework for the week,
and it would be a time that I could bond with him. And now he gets to see me on the court,
playing, and excelling in getting my college education.
Evelyn: Okay everyone, nobody really knows this, but I was extremely overweight in junior
high. I never tried out for any sports because I didn’t want to make a fool of myself. My brother
was visiting on his college break. He and I were always very close growing up and I gained a lot
of weight when he left for college. He encouraged me to try out for basketball and said he thinks
I had a natural talent for it. He gave me a bunch of reasons why (make friends, get out of the
house, good for my health). I hate to say it, but my brother was right. And now, I’ve lost a lot of
weight, I’ve made stellar friends, and I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in. And the best part is
that I got my parents to practice with me out front and now we are healthy as a family.
Sheila: I guess I’m last but not least. My story actually starts on your average day. I walked
home from school at the same time every day in junior high and one day I heard a bunch of
laughter. I decided to go investigate. There was a team playing basketball but the thing is it was
in a church parking lot. The kids were a little bit older than me but I decided to ask them if I
could play. I was nervous because I had never attended church anywhere. I ended up going and
playing with them weekly and through building relationships with the players, they invited me to

attend a service with them. The whole group always went to church together. So, to make a long
story short, my love for sport introduced me to religion which has positively impacted my life
since.
