Problems Addressed
o The objective is determined at addressing the high rate of obesity and overweight among children and adults in the United States. The issue is a
major health concern.
o The objective is aimed at addressing the issue of poor dietary plans and choices. Unhealthy consumption of foods such as high-calorie intake
results in overweight and obesity.
o The objective aims to address the health risks associated with obesity, such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
o The objective is aimed at addressing the issue of health disparities. Some ethnic and racial groups are at high risk of experiencing overweight
and obesity and associated health risks.
o The objective aims to address the issue of insufficient physical activity and limited access to healthy, nutritious foods.
Epidemiology, Incidence, Prevalence, and Cost-Burden of the Problem
o Overweight and obesity is a public health concern affecting most children and adults in the United States regardless of age, sex, ethnicity, race,
and social class.
o Obesity incident rates are on an upward trajectory. However, incidence and prevalence rates may differ depending on an individual’s race, social
class, status, age, geographical location, and ethnicity.
o As of health research conducted in 2021, it was determined that approximately 1 in 5 children (20%) and 2 in 5 adults (40%) experience obesity
and a high risk of encountering a health risk.
o Obesity, as a public health concern, results in loss of productivity and incurring of healthcare costs by an individual and the Federal government
of the United States.
o An estimated $210 billion is incurred annually by the United States to address the issue of children and adult obesity.
