Long term and Short Term Goals
A long-term goal for a nursing professional may be to advance to a leadership or
management position, such as becoming a nurse manager or director of nursing. A short-term
goal may be to obtain a certification in a specific area of nursing practice, such as becoming a
certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) or a certified nurse-midwife (CNM). Another
short-term goal could be to complete continuing education courses or additional training to stay
current in their field.
Week 8: AACN Essentials Paper In healthcare
AACN essentials provide necessary guidelines that must be used in learning programs
with the intention of achieving competencies among graduates at different levels. This includes
graduates from the baccalaureate and master’s well as doctors of nursing programs (Burns &
Delgado 2019). There is a total of nine AACN essentials that are going to be discussed in this
paper, and also a demonstration of how I managed to practice them during my nursing programs.
The aim of the paper is basically to highlight, describe and provide examples of how these
essentials can be observed, together with their effectiveness in achieving better healthcare
outcomes.
Essential I: Liberal Education for Baccalaureate Generalist Nursing Practice
The first AACN essential isliberal education for the baccalaureate general nursing
practice. This involves sharing an important form of education that enables nurses to provide
effective care to patients. The intention of this essential is to ensure the nurses are equipped with
information that would allow them to be fully knowledgeable on important healthcare aspects. In
applying this essential, I educated patients on different forms of health issues that could be a
threat to their health. This includes aspects like infectious diseases, and communicable diseases,

among many other things (Giddens et al., 2022). This enables them to have a deeper
understanding of such healthcare issues and also understand how to avoid being infected. I also
educated them on some of the practices they needed to observe in preventing being infected with
certain virus, and this involved simple practices such as observing personal hygiene and also
having regular checkups for their own health benefits.
Essential II: Basic Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Care and
Patient Safety
The second AACN essential is system leadership and basic organization for patient safety
and quality care. When it comes to healthcare, having leadership skills is significant in enhancing
better decision-making. It is important for one to be in a position to carry out some medical
research and guide others on what to do in different situations. This is significant, especially
when dealing with critical cases where the team members need reliable guidance before
performing different roles. Quality care and safety are also vital when it comes to achieving
patient-desired outcomes. In my practice, I took the initiative of guiding the team members on
how to achieve quality care, and this was considering the patients’ preferences regarding how
they would like to be treated. I believe in listening and observing the patients’ needs when it
comes to achieving quality care since it enhances maximum collaboration.
Essential III: Scholarship for Evidence-Based Practice
The third AACN essential is the scholarship of evidence-based practice, which involves
heavy reliance on the use of available and scientific evidence-based practices (Giddens et al.,
2022). This means that there is a need to have some proof to support different practices, which
should come from reliable sources. The intention of this is to ensure there is the utilization of
appropriate strategies in addressing different healthcare issues, which in turn reduces the chances

of having errors or negative healthcare outcomes in general. In my practice, I was able to use
evidence-based in handling my patients, specifically when it comes to infection control. I did
intensive research to understand how infections come about in the human body, how they spread,
their impact as well as how they could be controlled. I utilized information found in scholarly
sources and this enabled me to make the right healthcare decisions when dealing with my
patients.
Essential IV: Information Management and Application of Patient Care Technology
The fourth AACN essential is the application of patient care technology and information
management when dealing with patients (Welch & Smith 2022). It is important for healthcare
practitioners to be conversant with different forms of technology that are being used in the
healthcare system, especially those that have a direct impact on the patients. For instance, we
have EMR systems, which play a significant role in storing the health information of patients.
Healthcare practitioners should be able to understand how patients’ information is stored,
updated, and retried in these systems so that they can work better to achieve quality care. In my
practice, I studied how EMR works, and this allowed me to utilize the information found in the
medical history of the patients and provide them with relevant recommendations that were
important in improving their health conditions.
Essential V: Healthcare Policy, Finance, and Regulatory Environments
The next AACN essential is the healthcare policy, finance, and regulatory environment.
The healthcare policy provides the guidelines on what is expected from the patients and the
healthcare workers. Policies play a significant role in ensuring that all individuals within the
healthcare system conform to the rules that have been created when dealing with various
processes. On the other hand, the regulations in the financial policies also play a significant role

in guiding patients on how they are expected to make their payments and guidelines on insurance
covers, among many other things. This helps in ensuring there is a financial balance which in
turn ensures the whole healthcare system is impacted in a positive way. In my practice, I took
time to understand healthcare policies and financial guidelines. This made it possible for me to
engage in actions that were permitted within the organization, even in my interaction with
patients on financial matters.
Essential VI: Interprofessional Communication and Collaboration for Improving
Patient Health Outcomes
The sixth AACN essential is inter-professional collaboration and communication, which
aim at achieving positive patient outcomes. It is important for healthcare providers to work
together in order to achieve patient-centered care. Collaboration, in this case, involves sharing
information, supporting each other in research and decision-making processes, and taking good
care of the patients, among many other things. This helps in reducing the workload for each
healthcare giver, which in turn increases the chances of having workers performing to their best
level. This AACN essential is more of teamwork, which is vital, especially when dealing with
complex healthcare issues. I practice this essential in my practice by participating in teamwork,
where I shared the knowledge I had when it comes to dealing with health pandemics, which was
significant in guiding my colleagues on how to prepare and deal with health pandemics using the
available resources.
Essential VII: Clinical Prevention and Population Health
The seventh AACN essential is population health and clinical control. In this case, there
is more focus on promoting health and engaging in practices that can help in preventing injuries
(Burns & Delgado 2019). This is achieved by being vocal about practices that can help in

enhancing the health of people in society, and this includes being vaccinated, taking a balanced
diet, and engaging in physical activities, among many other things. The focus here is to ensure
people are well educated on their roles in maintaining their good health and also some of the
things they need to avoid for better health outcomes. In my practice, I implemented this by doing
intensive research on various communicable diseases, as well as those that were genetic such as
sickle cell. This made it possible for me to educate patients on the source of certain health
conditions, as well as possible strategies that could be implemented in dealing with them.
Essential VIII: Professionalism and Professional Values
The next AACN essential is professional values and professionalism. When it comes to
nursing practice, professionalism is vital in maintaining a better relationship between workers
and also between workers and patients. Professionalism, in this case, involved placing the main
focus on health issues and, at the same time, treating other people with respect regardless of their
differences. The end goal, in this case, is manly to improve the health condition of the patients,
and this is highly contributed to the kind of interaction that has been created between the
involved parties. In my practice, I observed this essential by being ethical, especially when
interacting with other people. I practices the values stated in the policies, such as respect,
honesty, and privacy, among many other things. This made it possible for me to have smooth
interactions, especially with my patients, which in turn made it easier for me to engage in actions
that improved their general health conditions.
Essential IX: Baccalaureate Generalist Nursing Practice
The ninth and last essential is the baccalaureate general nursing practice, which is all
about the utilization of practices that can lead to various specified outcomes. In this case, there is
emphasis on the integration of skills and knowledge required in addressing certain medical

issues. Physiological aspects such as the right attitude when dealing with the patients are also
observed, which makes it possible to create a good working environment with the intention of
achieving better medical outcomes. In my practice, I was able to learn the skills required when
dealing with patients of different conditions, which made it possible for me to give them the kind
of care they needed in improving their general conditions.
Conclusion
In conclusion, AACN essentials are all about some of the aspects that need to be
observed in enhancing competitiveness among graduates. The main focus of these essentials is
on the interaction between workers and patients. There is also more emphasis on the utilization
of practices that aim at improving the general health conditions of the patient, which can be
achieved by first ensuring the healthcare practitioners are equipped with the skills and
knowledge required to achieve certain outcomes. Therefore there is a need for graduates to
ensure they put all these guidelines into practice so that they can improve patient outcomes.

Personal Nursing Philosophy
One of my primary goals as a nurse is to deliver individualized, person-centered care for
each of my patients. Additionally, I like being a source of comfort and understanding for my
patients and making an effort to learn more about them throughout their time in my care. The
knowledge that I made a positive difference in another person’s life, whether it be physically,
psychologically, or emotionally, is why I decided to pursue this line of work. In nursing, health
refers to the patient’s emotional and physiological well-being. Caring for the youngsters in my
care every day has inspired me to become an advocate for all of my patients. Caregiving is in my
blood, and it’s always been my goal to help each patient in the best way possible. Each patient
deserves to be treated as an individual with their own set of needs and wants. The term nursing is
often used to refer to those who work in the field that focuses on treating patients who are ill.
Providing the best possible care for a patient requires a commitment to lifelong learning
and numerous hours spent honing relevant skills. Professionalism, in my view, is both expert
performance in all aspects of one’s field and a commitment to learning about its nuances while
maintaining a strong moral compass. Core values serve as a compass for nurses, and should be
used to assess and shape professional choices (Bender et al., 2021). These principles include
helping others, individual liberty, respect for others, honesty, and fair treatment of all people.
There’s a chance that some of these six values will be used more often or have a bigger impact on
patient care than the others. Integrity, followed by honesty and respect for each person, is the
most crucial core value in nursing, in my opinion. Being honest and responsible helps nurses
earn the confidence of their patients and their families, and treating patients with respect and
dignity demonstrates that they understand that their patients are human beings deserving of being

treated as such. When it comes to nursing’s basic principles, I place the utmost importance on
integrity since I know that being honest and doing what’s best for the patient is my job.
