ESSAY: THIAMINE METABOLISM ASSIGNMENTBased on your readings this week, write an essay on the significance of thiamine in human
metabolism and medicine. Your essay must identify relevant thiamine-dependent enzymes,
reactions and pathways as well as related disorders. Be sure to provide several examples of
enzymes that require the TPP cofactor, along with a description of the reactions they catalyze
(reactants and products of the reaction), the biochemical pathway associated with the enzyme
and the primary function of the pathway. By understanding the function of the pathway, it
becomes more apparent why a lack of thiamine in the diet results in certain specific clinical
manifestations when there is disfunction in that pathway. Try to correlate the clinical
observations associated with thiamine deficiency to specific functional pathways impacted by
the deficiency.
INSTRUCTIONS
You must give detailed and well-explained answers to the assignment questions for each module.
It is your responsibility to give clear, easy to understand and precise explanations in your
answers : The material covered in this course is very “molecular” in nature, so as you approach
each assignment, remember the overall objective is to explain clinical and physiological
observations (diseased states) through an understanding of the molecular processes that drive
them. Always make an attempt to explain how the underlying molecular processes give rise to
the observable states associated with human disease.
All assignment submissions should be consistent with the following;
• Length of assignment – Between 500-1000 words, excluding references and title
o The title and reference pages are excluded from the page count. No abstract is
needed.
• Format of assignment – AMA
• Number of citations – At least 3
• Acceptable sources – Peer-reviewed Journal articles
