Information in the lecture and the article on Best Practices may be very familiar to those of you who have worked or are working in the profession already. So, consider them refreshers on the foundation of Crisis Communication. After reflecting on both, answer the following questions. You can type your responses in the question/answer format; however, I do want you to elaborate as much as possible. Write beyond the simple yes/no or one sentence response. You can pull in other research/articles to prove your point or provide additional facts. This reflection assignment should be a minimum of 2 double typed pages.
1.Both the lecture and article on Best Practices offer a definition/example of a crisis. Taking these both into consideration, come up with your own definition of crisis communication.
2.The article states that there are 6 phases to every crisis. Carefully think about each of them and explain if there is a phase that should be added, taken away, or possibly combining some. For example, I think there is a phase that should come first, before the Warning phase. The Practice/Rehearsal phase is when an organization carries out a “practice run” of a crisis to insure all the wheels are in motion and every key player knows exactly what to do.
3.Media coverage and reporting of a crisis can have a major influence on how your handling of a crisis is perceived. Swift communication with the media is important for two reasons as the article states. What tool/tools would you have at your disposal to combat any negative press, or to disseminate information that the media is not? Why is this important?
4.The article is based on qualitative research and the authors found in their study that there are 10 Best Practices in the Aviation Industry to handle a crisis. After reading the list, I think you would agree that these are 10 best practices that could apply in every industry during a crisis. However, what do you think the aviation industry, and any industry should do post-crisis?
5.Lastly, there were three video clips to view. After viewing the two on Domino’s Pizza and the Florida School Shooting, in particular, come up with 2-3 key messages that you would put out through the media from the position of the PR person/Crisis Manager of one of those organizations. So, for example, if you were the PR person for Domino’s, what key messages would you provide to the media about this situation? Then explain why you came up with those particular messages. What is your purpose/rationale for developing those specific messages?
