My topic for “Cultural Observation Project Topic” is Asian Heritage Subculture.
Cultural Observation Submission
• CULTURAL OBSERVATION PROJECT: The
purpose of this project is to provide you with an
opportunity to experience our multicultural and
diverse global society. For this project, you are asked
to provide a cultural observation on a specific
subculture and use FOUR concepts learned in
sociology to analyze your experience.
You are encouraged to be creative with this project and
present your findings in an informative and interesting
PowerPoint presentation. Please feel free to include any
ILLUSTRATIONS, VIDEO CLIPS, CHARTS, DIAGRAMS,
POETRY, QUOTATIONS, etc.… related to your observation.
You will be presenting these for the class to review in a
discussion forum.
Your topic needs to be approved by me as indicated on your
course syllabus.
HOW SHOULD I ORGANIZE MY PROJECT?
You should begin by choosing a topic or area of interest. Your
textbook may give you a few ideas. With sociology concepts in
mind, you will then actively participate in a cultural
observation of your choice. Such observations could include:
• Interviewing someone about their different culture.
• Observing agents of socialization.
• Observing a cultural or community event.
• Attending a non-traditional church service.
• Participating in an ethnic meal.
• Doing extensive research on a culture.
• etc.…
Finally, provide an analysis of the cultural observation using
your knowledge of sociology.
HOW WILL THE INSTRUCTOR EVALUATE MY WORK?
To strive for the optimal grade, you must include the
following information within your Power Points in addition to
providing me with a separate write–up sheet answering the
following questions in a more in–depth manner:
1. The Experience (What did you do?)
2. The Community (Where did you do your
observation?)
3. The Timeframe (When and how long was this
observation?)
4. The Players (Who was involved and what was their
role and your role?)
5. The Findings (What behavior patterns did you
observe? What relationships and interaction did you
find? What significant information did you discover?)
6. The Analysis (How do you connect what you observed
with what you are learning in this class? Apply
sociology. What sociological concepts did you find in
your observation?)
7. Your Personal Reflection (What did you think about
this experience? What did you learn from this
experience? What did you enjoy most about this
project? What did you enjoy least about this project?
Explain!)
8. A copy to me of your PowerPoint presentation in
addition to a copy of the answers to the above items.
*** Power Point presentations must contain at
least 15 slides****
It is your responsibility to make sure that you are prepared to
post your project on the due date. If you do not post on the
due date/time you will have one letter grade deducted for each
day your project is late. Computer issues need to be resolved
in advance so that you can make adjustments if need be. I
suggest that you have your project completed in advance of
the due date in order to address these issues.
THIS IS NOT A COLLABORATIVE PROJECT, NOR
SHOULD YOU USE ANY OTHER STUDENT’S WORK.
YOU MAY NOT USE A PAPER/PROJECT YOU HAVE
PREVIOUSLY TURNED IN, PARTIALLY OR
OTHERWISE.
