After viewing the chapters assigned in Tightrope with the module materials, the ANA Ethical Standards (2015) and The Future of Nursing Report 2020 provide your reaction to the materials which synthesizes the materials and provides an understanding of how you will use this material to develop your role in policy development, revision and advocacy as an APRN. It is strongly suggested that you write your reflections on a weekly basis to integrate the reading in Tightrope with the other materials in the course module specifically. You will not turn your journal in until you have completed reading the book. Your journal should contain a title page and a reference page and be written in APA format.
The purpose of the assignment is for the student to develop insight into the breadth, scope, limitations and impact of policy decisions while determining where nursing fits into the creation, revision, advocacy for and responsibility to inform the policy cycle and policy makers. Tightrope assists by providing contemporary insight into application of The ANA Ethical Standards & Interpretive Statements (2015) which provide for the professional responsibility of nurses in advocating for populations and our profession. This docu-novel also assists those aspiring to consider the ask from the Future of Nursing 2020-2030 report. This moves the course focus beyond the bedside and into communities where nurses cannot escape the issues of social justice and allocation of precious and costly resources. When considering the Future of Nursing report, the novel calls us to reflect deeply on where and how best we can inform policy changes to advance equity in the provision of needs for society. We may also consider whether equity is related to health equity or whether health is the result of equity. Each entry should be focused on one issue Tightrope highlights within the course module. Concepts from the ANA Ethical Standards and or the Future of Nursing Report can also be the area of focus for an entry.
The insights gained in this reading and critical reflection will be useful in selecting a policy to draft a policy brief and oral testimony around. You will create entries based on your readings within the first 4 modules of the course. Students are to read the assigned readings in the book Tightrope and provide for their reflections about the current state of policy in America, how nurses have been involved in the policy decisions made in the book and how nurses can influence policy with their unique disciplinary understandings. Students are encouraged to organize their thoughts around a central theme that they identify in the assigned readings.
A journal entry must be at least 500 words, contains one aspect of the reading that impacted the student and reflects upon how the student will use the material to advance policy and advocacy within the population they intend to work with upon graduation. Students are encouraged to identify any materials from outside the course that are relevant to their entry and assist in relating how personal experiences and outside knowledge are being used to answer the prompt for consideration. Synthesis of the provisions of the novel, the ANA Ethical Standards 2015 and the Future of Nursing Report 2020-2030 is necessary to show mastery of the content. As such, assure that you reflect deeply on the implications of the Ethical Standards and the call to action of the Future of Nursing Report.
The Critical Reflection Journal is used to develop the student’s critical thinking skills on the interface between policy and advanced practice nursing. It serves as a vehicle to deepen awareness of the outcomes associated with American Health Policy and to increase the student’s breadth and understanding of relevant issues along side the APRN’s role. Students are encouraged to draw upon their nursing experience, material covered cumulatively in the course, related issues reported in the popular press, or observations made of health care systems and communities where they work/have worked or are engaged in clinical rotations at. When discussing personal experience, support reflections with sources to provide appropriate authority for your positions.
