Students will review two case studies provided by this instructor. Utilizing the information in the case study and a theory of YOUR choice, students will answer the following questions below. Students will submit a 5-7 page APA paper that utilizes the key terms and overall language of the theory in their responses.
According to your theory, what are the main goals as this client’s counselor? (Think about the goals of your theory.)
What do you believe to be your client’s key issues identified in the case study?
What techniques would you expect to use during the course of treatment? Include the rationale for each technique?
The theory I picked is: Gestalt Theory and Therapy
General Case Study
Chris is seeking counseling because he has been experiencing an increase in stress levels. He
reported, “I am overwhelmed and I often feel weighed down by my commitments in life.” He is
particularly concerned about his thoughts which he stated are negative at work and spilling over
into his home.
He has been married for three years to his partner James and they have adopted an 18-month son
named Andrew. He is 45 and works at a nurse at a local hospital. He is also enrolled in graduate
school where he is studying to get his degree in Nursing. He reported, “I have been in my
program for 3 years.” He also indicated that his partner is a nurse at the same hospital and they
take turns working alternate shifts for someone to look after Andrew. Chris reported that he
enjoys his job, however it can be demanding and physically tiring at times. He also reported that
while he enjoyed his studies at first, he is now finding it difficult to finish his school
responsibilities with a small baby. He stated, “It is taking me so long to finish school because of
financial issues.”
Chris has disclosed to you, “The demands of being a husband, nurse, father, and student are
taxing.” He also indicated that this is taking a toll on his physical and emotional health and has
found himself to be more snappy, irritable, exhausted, and unmotivated at home and work. He
stated, “I know my relationship with James is strained and I am beginning to resent him for
asking him to complete menial tasks around the house.” He indicated that he is feeling unloved
and taken for granted by his partner. He is also questioning whether he wants to finish his studies
or even stay in his marriage.
Chris reported that his primary care physician encouraged him to seek counseling services
although his chief complaint was about an itchy rash covering his arms and chest and migraines
at night and in the morning. Chris reported, “They ran medical tests and they did not find
anything wrong with me, so my doctor recommended some counseling due to the amount of
stress I have.”
