Your research study proposal will require you to describe the research methods and procedures you intend to use to conduct the study. This section of your proposal will combine information gathered from two items: a needs assessment and a program evaluation. You will begin the needs assessment this week and complete it in Week 6, then write a program evaluation in Week 7. A needs assessment will help you collect valuable information about any population you are studying.A program evaluation will use the needs assessment you’ve created to help you formulate a plan for assessing your study proposal. Based on the above information…. Using your research topic and/or question and the literature you have collected for your research study proposal, prepare for an interview where you can connect with someone in the field who is familiar with your topic. Follow these steps: Read existing literature related to the research study proposal you have selected to be prepared to have a dialogue on the topic.Identify professionals in the helping profession who may be available for an interview to informally chat about your topic. Reach out to these individuals to find someone who is available and willing to set up a time to speak to you.Prepare to ask the following questions to the professional:What is the single most pressing need individuals have in this community or with this concern? How are these needs currently being addressed, if at all? What could be done better to serve these individuals or community?Be sure to provide the professional with the University of Phoenix Interview Consent Form prior to conducting the interview AND turn this in for Week 6 Needs Assessment Part 2. Submit the following attestation statement for your assignment: “I, (insert name), attest that I am preparing to complete the interview with a professional in the field who will sign the consent for me to submit in Week 6 and am aware this is a part of my assignment for Week 6 Needs Assessment Part 2.”
The interviewer is Kyle James and She is a mental health counselor working with Mental health and Substance abuse.

Dalgaard et al. (2019) evaluate how transgenerational communication can be used to
address the adverse effects of trauma among children. Failure to communicate about trauma is
associated with different negative consequences, such as mental health complications among the
children, which in turn interferes with their mental health and optimal social-emotional
development. Diversity is not in dysfunctional family communication contributes to
transgenerational trauma as the children are not provided with the guidelines they require to
understand how they should handle different challenges. The authors give an example of the
Holocaust and other genocide survivors who prefer to be quiet about their traumas, thus failing to
prepare their children for the challenges they would face, such as discrimination. I will use this
article to show how communication can be used to address mental problems such as depression
in society.

RESEARCH STUDY PROPOSAL
The article explores how a holistic empowering model can be used as a body-mind-spirit
guide in supporting young people and families dealing with transgenerational trauma. Eads
(2022) states that trauma is responsible for mental and physical challenges among children.
When parents have traumatic problems, they risk transmitting them to their children. Some
events that show trauma are cycles of abuse, poor emotional co-regulations, and impaired
parenting. Traumas that happen in childhood or adulthood need to be addressed, which shows the
diversity of the issues as it involves any cases of trauma that could be associated with a negative
impact on the future. I will use this article to describe how the holistic empowerment model
effectively addresses trauma.

Howell et al. (2021) indicate that childhood experiences are associated with traumas that
may affect an individual in their later life. People who have faced such traumatic events require
guidance to develop resilience through a strengths-based intervention meant to address
intergenerational trauma. Cultural sensitivity is observed when addressing some of the traumatic
events a child faces, such as sexual abuse, which may have contributed to high-risk sexual
activities. I will use the article to explore how childhood traumas affect the mental welfare of an
individual and how counseling can be used to address the issue.

RESEARCH STUDY PROPOSAL
Isobel et al. (2019) assess the methods that can be used to stop passing down
intergenerational trauma to children. The authors define intergenerational trauma as a process
that results in psychological problems transmitted with communities and families. Developing
attachment relationships between parents and children can lead to passing down generational
trauma and predisposing the children to grow such emotional problem. Cultural sensitivity is
notable in resolving parental trauma is critical in stopping the transmission, as the parents will be
able to develop healthy attachments with their children, allowing them to parent their children
through healthy attachments and not pass down the same issues they experienced. I will use this
article to show that parents require a mental health intervention that helps them to address their
issues and place them in the right mental state to parent their children without imparting any
emotional torture.

trauma in Black families: Trauma‐informed socioculturally attuned family
therapy. Journal of Marital and Family Therapy. https://doi.org/10.1111/jmft.12632
The article shows the recognition of traumatic experiences among people and how it has affected
their mental health. Lee et al. (2023) indicate that black communities have been shown to have
the highest rates of traumatic events. Family therapy can be an effective way of addressing these
problems and assisting families to address their mental health problems. Multicultural counseling
competencies would be effective in this case, and following social justice to ensure that the
population receives the right assistance. I will use the article to illustrate the competencies
needed to address the issues associated with counseling and providing therapy to people from
different cultural backgrounds.

https://doi.org/10.5455/medscience.2022.04.090
According to Ozturk (2022), two opposite directions can be used to explain
intergenerational psychosocial transformation and intergeneration fossilization and
intergenerational development. Family dynamics and parenting style affect the psychosocial
formation and how the transgenerational trauma will be transmitted. Diversity is seen in the
impacts families have on the psychological welfare of the children. It is expected that the family
is responsible for teaching the children loyalty, honesty, compassion, and strategies that they can
use to cope with traumatic experiences. However, the family can also be responsible for
traumatizing a child by using parenting styles that are violence-oriented and unempathetic, which
are considered a way of punishing the children. I will use this article to show that children across
the globe with traumatic lives are mostly associated with trauma, which they also pass through
their children as they are unaware of healthy methods to express their problems.

The article uses a transdisciplinarity approach to explore how transgenerational traumas
are passed down. The authors indicate that natural disasters, genocide, and wars affect the
community at the macro and micro levels. People who experience these events develop trauma
that they pass down to their offspring through psycho-dynamics, genes, socio-dynamics, and
family dynamics. Cultural aspects is seen in trauma narratives are used to carry down emotional

and mental turmoil as they are found in political conflicts, institutions, cultural norms, myths,
and stories. I will use the article to show how the transdisciplinary approach is the best to address
the issue as it focuses on looking beyond all the activities associated with a certain trauma.
Understanding all the trauma-related factors makes it possible to find how passing down to other
generations can be prevented.

RESEARCH STUDY PROPOSAL
Research Study Proposal Part C: Outline
1. Describe the scope of investigation for your study.
The study will cover how intergenerational trauma is passed down in generations in a family. It
will explore family dynamics that contribute to trauma and determine the efficacy of the Holistic
Empowerment Model in addressing the issues (Eads, 2022).
2. Describe the qualitative perspective to be used in the study.
The qualitative method will effectively understand the experiences that result in trauma. The
psychological impacts will be associated with behaviors, attitudes, beliefs, and interactions
related to mental health challenges (Guest et al., 2020).
3. Describe the methods you will use to collect from the participants.
a. Method 1: Describe how you will collect data from the participants.
Interviews will be the best way to collect data from the interventions. Face-to-face interviews
will help view the physical reactions of the participants and understand their emotions.
b. Method 1: Describe how you will record the data.
During the interviews, I will be recording audio to compile the data (Guest et al., 2020). I’ll take
some notes, too, on things like the most widespread topics I hear from the attendees.
c. Method 2: Describe how you will collect data from the participants.
Questionnaires will be effective, with a combination of open and close-ended questions. This
will help explore the issue extensively, giving the participants a chance to explore the problems
by expressing their ideas (Guest et al., 2020).
d. Method 2: Describe how you will record the data.
3
RESEARCH STUDY PROPOSAL
Data will be recorded through thematic analysis of the questionnaires to determine the common
themes among the participants.
e. Method 3: Describe how you will collect data from the participants.
Phone call interviews will be the third data collection method, with each call lasting ten to thirty
minutes (Guest et al., 2020).
f. Method 3: Describe how you will record the data.
During the phone calls, I will be recording the audio as I ask the questions and the participants
give the responses.
Note: Be sure to outline three methods and full protocol for triangulation (e.g., if having
interviews, then write the questions; if collecting documents be specific of what, from who, from
what time frame)
Similar questions will be administered in the interviews and for the questionnaires. However, the
questionnaire will have an additional number of close-ended questions.
Interview Question
1. How was your upbringing?
2. Can you say your parents were violent or compassionate when raising you?
3. What is your parenting style?
4. How do you relate with your children?
5. Which generational traumas did you get from your parents?
6. Which generational traumas have you passed to your children?
7. Have you ever attended therapy for any mental health problems?
8. Do you have any childhood traumas?
9. How have they impacted your life mentally and physically?
4

4. Describe the setting in which the research will be conducted.
There will be no specific setting that will be used in this study.
5. What inclusion and exclusion criteria will be involved for participant selection?
The inclusion criterion will be families and individuals with experiences that caused trauma. The
exclusion criterion will be children.
6. What sampling method will be used?
I will use simple random sampling methods as it will be the best to select any participant, thus
reducing bias and ensuring that data is collected from a wide range of individuals.
7. How will subjects be recruited?
Recruitment will be done through advertisement and the use of flyers in public settings. It will
include a general purpose of the study and what will be happening.
8. Describe steps you will take to ensure dependability for trustworthiness.
6
RESEARCH STUDY PROPOSAL
I will familiarize myself with the data I will use in the process. I will make sure that the
researchers are qualified for the task. I will inform the participants of what will be expected of
them.
9. Describe steps you will take to ensure credibility for trustworthiness.
Credibility will be ensured through using experts in the data analysis. They will be able to
establish the patterns and themes in the collected data.
10. Describe steps you will take to ensure confirmability for trustworthiness.
All participants will need background research to confirm that they are qualified to complete the
study.
11. Identify and describe the coding methods you will use to identify key themes/results.
The inductive/open coding method will be used to provide a thorough and explanatory method to
the themes and patterns established in the analysis method (Guest et al., 2020).
12. Describe transferability of the results from participants to others.
A thick description will be used and will help in providing enough details related to the
participants, site, and procedures applied in data collection during the study.
13. What ethical considerations will you incorporate?
The ethical consideration is the privacy and confidentiality of the participant’s data. Their
information will be kept private during the study (Guest et al., 2020).
14. What actions will you take to address diversity and inclusion?
During the recruitment process, I will ensure that people are randomly selected from a diverse
group regarding age, gender, sexuality, racial and cultural beliefs.
15. Describe some foreseen limitations of the study (e.g., interval validity concerns for the
research design).
7
RESEARCH STUDY PROPOSAL
A possible limitation is the lack of reliable information, given that mental health topic is
sensitive and most people may be unwilling to talk about their traumas (Eads, 2022).
16. Explain the implications of your proposed study to the field.
The research results will be effective in establishing how transgenerational trauma can be
addressed through therapy, thus reducing transfers to children.
17. Describe future research ideas and directions for your proposal.
Future research should explore the healthy parenting skills and styles that should be used with
children to avoid passing down trauma to them (Eads, 2022).
18. Explain your plan to disseminate the final results. Specifically, identify a journal for
submission for publication and one conference to submit a proposal to present the findings.
I will publish the research results with PubMed journal to make sure that they can be accessed in
mental health treatment and interventions.

Topic of Interest
How does intergenerational trauma affect the dynamic of families and can the Holistic
Empowerment Model help decease the impact?
Intergenerational transmission is the topic of interest and the Holistic Empowerment
Model. I am interested to see how intergeneration trauma impacts the dynamic of the family as
a whole. This topic can lead to a definition of family culture and the generational curses that
have been passed down. Furthermore, it can also lead to the cycle of breaking
intergenerational curses and the impact that this can also cause. Intergenerational transmission
that I am focused on is based on the maternal trauma and how this is passed down. The social
norm is that mothers are supposed to be more nurturing and loving, but how does a person’s
intergenerational trauma affect the nurturing that is given. It is also vividly known that mothers
are most likely to have more mental illness than their partners. According to Minkin & Horowitz
(2023), mothers worry more than the fathers about a host of issues. One of the major problems
that mothers tend to worry about is that they are trying to raise their children in a very or
somewhat different way compared with how they were raised.
Topic of Interest and Rationale for Research
Intergenerational transmission is still something that is widely researched today and its
continually an ongoing battle within the field of mental health. Individuals that have grown up
with intergenerational trauma especially experiencing it from their mother, tend to have issues
with attachments. Patterns of insecure attachments across generations have been an issue that
affects and impacts how individuals perceive life as adults. Intergenerational trauma is
unresolved trauma that continues to be passed down and widely impacts the dynamic of the
Research Study Proposal

family as a whole but how? We know it impacts a person’s perception of the world, but what
does it also affect? How does one cope with the intergenerational transmission of trauma?
Socially and culturally we have seen in the mental health field that “it’s a hush hush attitude”,
one does not talk about the trauma passed down, one fakes it till they make it, and the
individual(s) wear masks. The purpose for my topic of interest is to see how the Holistic
Empowerment Model can help decrease these attitudes we have about intergenerational
transmission and how it can decrease the impact that it has on the family. If the mother, which
is the focal point of my topic is in treatment using this therapeutic approach, how can she
implement positive reinforcement to change the course of these generational curse?
Address or Incorporate Cultural Awareness, Cultural Sensitivity, and/or Diversity
Intergenerational transmission affects all cultures and being able to focus primarily on
the trauma that the mother has endure from generations, can help implement changes in all
cultures. For instances, the article “Intergenerational Trauma Among Substance-Using Native
American, Latina, and White Mothers Living in the Southwestern United States” (Stevens et al.
(2015), provides information regarding demographic information, substance usage,
intergenerational exposure to mothering, and other family traumatic exposures across racial and
ethnic groups. This article also is one of many that compare the difference and similarities
throughout and are culturally aware of how each ethnic group significantly respond. Using the
Holistic Empowerment Model is the promotion of the psycho-spiritual realm of personality
which is a critical component to the well-being and health of individuals (Lee, 2008). Being able
to use the Holistic Empowerment Model to decrease the impact of intergenerational trauma, is
cultural competent due to it allowing counselors to openly exploring and including spiritual and
religion discussions within the counseling process.
