Answer 1 of the following questions:
- Have you witnessed discrimination or microaggressions on your campus or in your life due to your/someone’s sexual orientation? What impact does that have on students, particularly students who are lesbian, gay, or sexually fluid?
- What does the #MeToo social media campaign say about the prevalence of sexual harassment and assault and women’s perceptions of speaking out about it? What is one small way you can be mindful of and resist from participating in rape culture?
- Research shows that trauma, particularly childhood trauma, can have lasting impacts on the brain and development. Both boys and girls experience traumatic events. However, women’s marginalized status, particularly in certain cultures and societies, may intersect with traumatic events both in women’s childhood and adulthood and impact them in significant ways. Nadine Burke Harris does an excellent job explaining adverse childhood experiences (ACES) in this TED Talk: https://www.ted.com/talks/nadine_burke_harris_how_childhood_trauma_affects_health_across_a_lifetimeLinks to an external site.
Consider how trauma might impact women who have more than one marginalized identity (e.g., women of color, queer or transwomen, immigrant women, etc.). How might this impact their mental health and access to health care? How might trauma affect men?
