Discuss about the demographic population of little village chicago il.
Windshield Survey: Little Village Chicago Il
Housing and Zoning
This area mainly has old buildings and old houses. However, there is evidence that buildings and
houses have received maintenance through the neighborhood. Even though I was able to notice a
few buildings that have vacant locales, they also seem to be well maintained. I was also able to
notice that most of the residences are multifamily dwellings.
Signs of Decay
The area is fairly maintained considering that this an old community with multiple vacant local
spaces. I did not observe garbage on the streets of this community. However, the allies of this
area are not well maintained. The garbage carts are overflowing and there is a lot of garbage on
the floor. This is an issue because this environment promotes an increase in the rodents and other
wildlife to live and hide there. I was not able to observe any vacant lots.
Parks and Recreational Areas
While driving through this community, I saw several parks and recreational areas. There were
basketball courts, a skating rink, trails used for fitness (walking, running, etc.), turf fields to play
sports such as soccer, and picnic areas.
Common Areas
Some common areas are parks, churches, the library, the mall, and the athletic fields. I also
noticed that the people in this area also like to buy snacks with small street vendors. These
vendors sell foods such as corn, snowcones, nachos, icecream, and fruit.
Stores
There are several stores in this community such as Dulcelandia (a store that sells Mexican
candy), the Discount Mall, and bakeries. A popular restaurant in Little Village is called “El
Milagro.” They are known for making their own hand-made tortillas. This area also has multiple
fresh produce markets such as Cermak Produce and La Chiquita, where people from this
community can easily access nutritious foods.
Transportation
You can see all types of transportation here. I saw people on bikes, on the bus, walking, and
driving in cars. In addition, I was able to encounter multiple cars that provide ride services
through apps. Moreover, I also encounter multiple vehicles that provide transportation for people
with disabilities.
Communication
This community has evident access to local and national newspapers as I was able to observe
multiple newspaper stands. This area also has multiple informational posters that are in English
and in Spanish. I was also able to observe that buses stop and the actual buses carry information
about health clinics and colleges to promote better health and higher education.
Service Centers
This area has two Walgreens that provide pharmacy services. I was able to notice that there used
to be a CVS store but it is closed now. This area also has multiple elementary schools and high
schools including a relatively new high school that has a lot of green area. I also noticed multiple
staffing offices where people keep going in and out. The area also has a few banks that provide
multiple services to the people in the community as evidence of their advertisements on their
windows.
People in the Community
This community is mainly inhabited by Hispanics. During the day people on the streets are
hispanics. However, there are some African Americans on the streets during the day. There is
evidence that the people in this community belong to the working and lower class. I was able to
observe multiple vendors on the street.
IndustriesThe main industry that I noticed was gastronomy and most of the people working there are
people from the community. I also noticed multiple clothing stores that are all over the
neighborhood. In addition, many people from this are street vendors
Protective ServicesThe State of Illinois Circuit Court of Cook County is located at 2600 S California St. This is
located on the east end of the neighborhood border. The Chicago Fire Department Engine 10 is
located at 2343 S Kedzie Ave on the north end of the neighborhood border. There is evidence of
police presence in the community as there are several cop cars that are parked down 26th St.
Ethnicity
According to the Statistical Atlas, Little Village is mainly inhabited by Hispanics, some African
American, few white, and the remaining are mixed and other. This is evident as you travel
through the neighborhood that is dominated by hispanic local businesses and several hispanic
oriented services.
Religion
There are multiple churches present in Little Village. A majority of them are Roman Catholic
Churches, some with grade schools, others as independent churches. There were two Baptist
Churches present as well as two Community Churches that did not appear to have an outwardly
obvious chosen Religion.
Health and Morbidity
There is evidence of drug and alcohol abuse in the community. This is noted through a handful
of older men who were visible on 26th street looking disheveled, sleeping on benches, or
walking down the street with bottles of beer or liquor. Additionally, there were several bottles
shattered randomly throughout the street. While there was no obvious sign of illicit drug abuse,
one can assume based on the appearance of some of the people on the street that drugs may have
been in their system. As we know drug and alcohol abuse is intrinsically tied to mental health
issues and therefore it is likely present in the community. There was a clinic advertising for
COVID tests as well as a diabetes clinic which relates to communicable and chronic disease.
