NEWSLETTER for HEALTH EDUCATION SPECIALISTS
PROJECT
(Total of 78 Points)
This assignment asks you to research certain facets within our field and create an
Employment Newsletter for Health Education Specialists. This means that you are
writing this newsletter FOR other professionals in our field (not for the public).
NOTES:
Do not use “I, me, my, or mine” in the language of this newsletter. Keep it
professional. Writing a crisp, easy-to-digest, helpful document like this is an
important skill to have in this profession!
Please read the entirety of this document before you begin working on this
project.
See the Student Example posted in the “Newsletter Project” folder.
Do not attempt to do this project at the last minute!
**********************************************************************************************************
Your Newsletter should include the following subtitles and content:
1. Newsletter Title (6 points)
Make sure your newsletter has a title. Even better if it’s catchy!
2. Where Do Health Education Specialists Work? (12 points)
List three organizations (anywhere in the United States) where Health Education
Specialists are employed. Include the following:
a. name of organization b) physical location of organization c) Short 1- to
2-sentence description of what each organization does. (4 points per
organization)
3. A Day in the Life of a Health Education Specialist (8 points)
For ONE of the organizations above, list the job responsibilities for the Health
Education Specialist.
4. Upcoming Conference (10 points)
List one upcoming national (or international) conference that health education
specialists can attend (virtually or in- person) in 2023 or 2024. For the conference,
include: a) name of conference, b) conference theme, c) date(s) of the conference,
AND d) registration start date (or deadline).
NOTE: Do NOT list a conference that doesn’t make sense for
Health Education Specialists to attend (e.g. a conference meant
for medical doctors, surgeons, dentists, nurses, etc, or a
conference with a very technical focus that wouldn’t apply to the
work we do). Points will be deducted if you do so!
5. Salary Update (4 points)
List the average salary (national) of a Health Education Specialist. Cite your
source (not just a hyperlink!)
Make sure your source is valid (and not second-hand reporting from a news site or
other business website, e.g. GlassDoor).
6. Becoming a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) (12 points)
To answer these, read the CHES PowerPoint presentation in the “Newsletter
Project” folder, and visit www.nchec.org
a. Briefly discuss 3 benefits of obtaining CHES certification. (6 points)
b. List the criteria one must meet in order to take the CHES exam. (4 points)
c. Briefly describe two factoids about the CHES. (2 points)
7. July OR August is (your selection here) Awareness Month (Week or Day) (26
points)
For example, Mental Health Awareness Month (See more ideas below.)
a. Describe the purpose behind
Awareness Month/Week/Day. (2 points)
b. Define health equity. (3 points)
c. Present 3 national statistics that highlight disparities resulting from the health
issue you’ve selected. Remember: Each statistic you select should reflect a
health disparity related to your topic. For example, if you are selecting
“Mental Health Awareness Month,” then reporting on the number of Americans
who have suffered from depression is not a disparity. (12 points)
This is an example of a statistic that highlights a mental health disparity:
Only 51.7% of Asian adults who suffered a major depressive episode received mental
health treatment versus 70.2% of Non-Hispanic Whites.
SAMHSA, 2020. Results from the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health: Mental Health Detailed Tables. Table 8.39B. Retrieved
from: https://www.minorityhealth.hhs.gov/omh/browse.aspx?lvl=4&lvlid=54 on April 27, 2023.
One more note: Make sure that the statistics you identify are connected to the
Awareness Month you selected and the activities you’ll identify below!
d. Describe 1 creative activity that a Health Education Specialist can implement
at a local level to promote X Month. Don’t invent the wheel; do your research
and learn about the various ways that this month is being promoted. You can
find ideas on many association and agency websites that share ways to promote
awareness. Then, revise and make it your own. (5 points)
FYI: developing and disseminating a flyer is not a creative activity! Think
about the target populations that your awareness month is addressing and
tailor your activities to these populations.
e. Provide 2 resources for Health Education Specialists who want to learn more
about this topic. Don’t simply list the name of an agency (without a way to
contact them). Make sure to give enough information for each resource you
provide (e.g. name of agency, website, phone number, Instagram handle) so
that someone reading your newsletter could readily use this resource. (4
points)
For Question #8:
Let’s generate some examples of National Health Observances for July and
August:
JULY:
UV Safety Month
National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month
National Park and Recreation Month
AUGUST:

PICK ONE OF THE ABOVE – OR DO YOUR OWN SEARCH AND USE ANOTHER ONE!

PLEASE NOTE: If you can do this project in a “newsletter” format, then I
encourage you to do so. This said, I understand that not every computer comes
with a “newsletter” formatting option and/or computers can be cranky about
formatting in this way. If this is your case, then it is OK for you to provide this
information within a regular Word document. Your grade will not suffer if you
present it in this way.
That said, PLEASE NOTE: In either format, make sure to use the headings above,
e.g. “Where do Health Education Specialists Work?” “Upcoming Conference,”
“Salary Update,” etc.
As a reminder, I cannot review drafts of your work. But, if you have specific
questions or need clarification on how to do this assignment, please e-mail me!
