Assignment 2: Ethical Issues in Leadership Presentation
The ethical issues presentation will address ethical issues faced by nurse leaders in today’s healthcare
environment. The specific issue selected for discussion should have clearly identifiable pros and
cons that, when analyzed, will allow the student to form a defensible position related to the issue
as it is evident from the perspective of a nurse leadership position. Principles from identified
codes of ethics should be examined in relation to the issue and position from the perspective of
the nurse leader. The PowerPoint presentation should have 12 to15 slides without counting
references and title pages. This assignment must be submitted using the SafeAssign and
meet the criteria that all submitted work must fall below a 20% similarity index
(excluding all headings and references).
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to apply ethical principles to current leadership
practices within healthcare by
a) explaining two ethical principles,
b) applying selected ethical principles to leadership,
c) identifying how selected ethical principles can prevent or resolve leadership concerns,
d) discussing how selected ethical principles will be incorporated into own leadership practices,
e) communicate ideas in a clear, succinct and scholarly manner
The student should address the following:
Pick an ethical or legal issue in nursing leadership. You may use any of the subjects discussed in
prior units or select an issue which is of significance nationally, locally or regionally within your
own institution. Create a PowerPoint presentation detailing this issue. Include background
information, why this is an issue, the role of the leader in managing this issue, and proposed
solutions.
• Add presenter notes to the slide to enhance the content of the slides, as if you were
presenting to a group, and this is your script. In PowerPoint, access “notes view” to see
the presenter notes boxes.
• Slides should not contain paragraphs of narrative. They should contain only bullet points
or brief explanations.
• The longer narratives go in your presenter notes.
• Speaker’s notes content will be graded under the “content” sections of the rubric.
• Lack of speaker’s notes will significantly affect the grades in those areas.
• Include citations on the slides.
• Create a reference slide and put all references used in the presentation.

Introduction: The introduction: contains a few statements about ethical principles in general,
identification of two ethical principles to be used in the presentation.

Definition & Explanation of the ethical principles: After the introduction, the next section of
the presentation provides a definition and explanation of two ethical principles. Each of the
selected ethical principles are then applied to leadership within any healthcare setting. Scholarly
support is provided for the definitions, explanations, and application areas. Explanation and
Application of Ethical Principles to Leadership- this section contains a definition and
explanation of each of the selected ethical principles. Scholarly references are required
published in the past five years.
Application: Following the explanation, the next section presents information on how the
selected ethical principles either prevent or solve two different leadership concerns within
healthcare. Scholarly support is required.

Application of Ethical Principles to Leadership Issues this section identifies how the
selected ethical principles either prevent or solve two different leadership concerns within
healthcare. For example, nonmaleficence relates to the leadership concern of high rate of
medication errors. Scholarly support is required.
Leadership Practice: This section of the presentation identifies how a nurse leader will
incorporate each of the selected ethical principles into leadership activities within healthcare.
This must be detailed and specific. A realistic understanding of how these principles are applied
and used in practice must be presented.

Application of Ethical Principles to Own Leadership – this section is a description of how
the learner will incorporate each of the two selected ethical principles into their own
leadership activities. This needs to be specific and can consider future leadership
opportunities. Scholarly support is required.
Conclusion: A conclusion of this presentation identifies key points from the presentation as
well as of insights gained (what was learned) about applying ethical principles with leadership
through knowledge gained from putting together the presentation.
