Students will participate in a case study discussion board activity
where they will be presented with a scenario related to community health
promotion. They will be asked to analyze the scenario and apply the
principles and concepts learned in the module to propose evidence-based
strategies and interventions for promoting community health. This

activity promotes critical thinking and applying knowledge gained from

Scenario Details
Case Study
You are a BSN nursing student participating in a clinical rotation
on a medical-surgical unit. Your patient is a 62-year-old female who
underwent abdominal surgery yesterday. The nurse caring for the patient
has noticed that she consistently rates her pain as a 2 out of 10, despite
exhibiting signs of discomfort. The nurse suspects that the patient may
be underreporting her pain. As a BSN nursing student, you must
advocate for the patient’s comfort and ensure appropriate pain
management.
In response to this scenario, students will be asked to analyze the
situation from a patient safety perspective and identify potential patient
safety issues related to pain management. They will then apply the
knowledge acquired from the module topics on principles and concepts
of community health promotion to propose evidence-based strategies and
interventions for addressing these safety issues.

Learning Activity
You have been sent to a remote location as a community health
nurse. The town has a high rate of obesity, according to your agency.
Multiple health issues have resulted from this. To gather information on
the community’s assets and health needs connected to obesity, you have
been assigned to perform a community health assessment.
Students must respond to this scenario by gathering information
on the community’s health needs connected to obesity using the various
assessment tools and techniques they learned throughout the module.
They will examine the information to determine the main health
problems and danger signs of obesity in the neighborhood. Students will
create an extensive community health assessment plan based on their
findings, including interventions and evidence-based techniques for
encouraging healthy weight and addressing the root causes of obesity.
This activity promotes critical thinking, applying assessment skills, and
developing intervention plans based on community health needs..

Scenario
A nurse is caring for an elderly patient who has just been
discharged from the hospital. The patient is hesitant to go to follow-up
appointments because of the difficulty in transportation. The nurse is

worried that the patient will have difficulty managing their health
condition and want to ensure the safety of the patient after discharge.
Students will be asked to analyze the scenario in the context of
the QSEN framework and identify how the Quad Council Competencies
can be used to address the patient’s safety problems. They must also
reflect on their own experiences and observations related to the quality
and safety of healthcare.
