Advocacy Paper
Write an advocacy plan that describes a problem at a place of work and a plan to advocate for change. It must have an Adult Gerontology Advanced Practice focus.
1. Use resources such as newspapers, the internet, agency reports or documents, public or academic data sources, and interviews of individuals to get the facts and evidence to support the existence of the problem and solution.
2. The paper will have the following sections:
Get the Facts (3-4 paragraphs). Facts will vary with each situation, here are some things to consider as you write this section
— How long has the problem occurred?
— Identify at least one real story of how an individual or organization has been impacted by the problem.
— Why has the problem not been resolved? What actions have been taken or tried?
— What laws or rules apply?
— Who knows about the problem?
— Who thinks there is a problem? Who thinks there is not a problem?
— Who benefits from the problem?
3. Organize Support/Form a Coalition (2-4 paragraphs)
— Identify individuals who could be interested in changing the issue. Identify individuals inside andoutside of the organization who could support change.
— Identify other organizations that could be interested in changing the issue.
— Describe the fundamental goal of the work of the coalition. Decide which goals will meet the community’s needs for change. Identify at least one short-term goal (weeks to months) and one long-term goal (months to years) 4. Write your plan: Describe a plan on how you would reach out to the individuals and groups to describe the problem and ask for their support or participation in a coalition Here are some things to think about as you write your plan. (up to one page) — Describe at least 3 stakeholders who would be the right audience to hear your message and could positively impact the problem. The stakeholders could be committee chairs, department chairs, or other organizational leaders.
— Describe how you will set up appointments to meet with the stakeholders identified.
— Describe any media you could use, including news releases, social media, or blogs.
— Describe who will lead the effort to create change.
— Define each coalition member’s level of participation.
— Describe how you will communicate (email, chat boards, apps like Slack).
— Describe who will have decision-making authority in the coalition.
— Describe the type of campaign (in-your-face, diplomatic, high media visibility)
— Describe how you will evaluate success through process measures (programs, activities, policies, procedures that tell the how and why) and outcome measures (whether the coalition achieved its goals). Identify 2 process measures and 2 outcome measures you will evaluate.
5. Communicate a Clear and Compelling Story of What is Wrong and What Should be Done (3-4 paragraphs)
— Describe 3 accurate facts you will highlight.
— Clearly state the issues using a broadly acknowledged value. Broadly acknowledged value can be described as finding a viewpoint that everyone can support because supporting the viewpoint benefits everyone for the common good.
